About the Indian Premier League (IPL)

Indian Premier League (IPL) is a professional Twenty20 cricket league in India founded by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2008. Lalit Modi, the president of BCCI is said to be the mastermind behind the idea of the IPL. He has spelled out all the details of the tournament, whether it’s the format, franchise revenue system, the prize money, and squad composition rules. IPL is contested during March/ April/May every year. The league represents eight different cities in India:

  • Chennai Super Kings
  • Delhi Capitals
  • Kings XI Punjab
  • Kolkata Knight Rider
  • Mumbai Indians
  • Rajasthan Royals
  • Royal Challengers Bangalore
  • Sunrisers Hyderabad

Till now, there have been twelve seasons. The current IPL title holders are the Mumbai Indians who had won the 2019 season. The 2020 season is being suspended from a long time, due to growing cases of COVID-19 in India. But, as per the confirmation from the IPL Chairman – Brijesh Patel on 24th July, the IPL season is decided to be hosted in Dubai, UAE. The IPL 2020 dates are from 19th September to 8th November. However, the official announcement of IPL 2020 time table is yet to be made. Everyone is keeping eyes at Indian Premier League’s Governing Council meeting.

The coming week will be crucial for the Governing council as it will finalize the details and approve the schedule. The IPL 2020 match schedule will be of 51 days. IPL became the talking point after ICC decided to shift the ICC T20 World 2020 to October 2021. It was supposed to be held in October-November 2020 in Australia. The BCCI will formally be writing to the Emirates Cricket Board to look over IPL 2020 schedule. The governing body is opting for a Standard Operating Procedure so that the safety of players and staff can be ensured against COVID-19 threat.

However, BCCI will leave on the UAE Government to decide whether the crowd will be invited or not. Three grounds have been prioritized to host IPL matches – Sharjah, Sheikh Zayed Stadium and the Dubai International Stadium. Two matches will be held each on Saturdays and Mondays.  IPL franchises are expected to leave their places by 20th August. This will give them enough time to prepare.

Apart from IPL 2020 schedule, The Indian team is also set to play a four-match test series against Australia which is going to start from 3rd December. Cricket Australia is quite confident to go ahead with the series.

So it seems that cricket will be on the board soon. So, just wait and keep the spirit alive to watch your favorite cricket matches.
